your first visit
What to expect
Warm Welcome
When you arrive, our team will greet you and your child by name. We want every visit to start with a smile. Your child can explore our kid-friendly waiting area while we get everything ready.
Getting to Know You
We will review your child's health history and discuss any concerns. This is your chance to share anything that will help us provide the best care, from fears and sensitivities to favorite characters.
Gentle Exam
Dr. Balster or Dr. Pfohl will perform a thorough but gentle exam of your child's teeth, gums, bite, and jaw development. We use digital X-rays with significantly reduced radiation when needed.
Cleaning & Fluoride
If appropriate, our hygienist will provide a professional cleaning and fluoride treatment. We go at your child's pace and make sure they feel comfortable throughout.
Parent Chat
After the visit, the doctor will sit down with you to discuss findings, answer questions, and create a personalized care plan. No surprises, no rush.

common questions
Frequently asked questions
When should my child first visit the dentist?
The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends your child visit the dentist by their first birthday or when their first tooth appears. Early visits help establish a positive dental experience and allow us to catch potential issues before they develop.
What should I bring to the first appointment?
Please bring your dental insurance card (if applicable), a completed patient form (available on request), and a list of any medications your child takes. If your child has a favorite toy or comfort item, bring that too.
Do you accept my insurance?
We accept most major dental insurance plans. Our team will verify your benefits before your visit so there are no surprises. We also offer affordable payment options for families without insurance.
How do I help my child prepare for their first visit?
Keep it positive and simple. Read books about visiting the dentist, avoid using words like 'hurt' or 'shot,' and let your child know the dentist is a friend who helps keep their smile healthy. Our team is trained to help anxious children feel comfortable.
What if my child is scared of the dentist?
That is completely normal. Our doctors and staff are specifically trained in child behavior management. We use gentle, patient approaches like tell-show-do, distraction, and positive reinforcement. For children with severe anxiety, we offer sedation options.
Do you handle dental emergencies?
Yes. Both Dr. Balster and Dr. Pfohl are available after hours for pediatric dental emergencies. If your child has a dental emergency, call (319) 294-8181 immediately.
